Building a lean, high security site platform to service the TEEG portfolio

The Entertainment and Education Group, otherwise know as TEEG, is one of the largest Family Entertainment firms in the world, with over 324 Entertainment centres across the Asia Pacific Region. Their brief was to develop a new web platform for their flagship Kingpin brand, which could then be adapted across their portfolio,  including AMF Bowling and Timezone.

With site stability and customer data security as key priorities, TEEG aimed to redevelop its customer-facing technology platforms to reduce the risk of threats and incursions while engineering a platform that is highly redundant and highly secure.

The platform needed to be adaptable to the varying functional requirements across the TEEG suite of brands, taking into account not only brand and design related adjustments but also multiple languages to support TEEG’s extensive footprint across Asia.

“Deepend have been our key partner in developing our brand websites. All our websites are built using Umbraco CMS and Deepend have been instrumental in working with our in-house UI designers to seamlessly transfer our vision into high performing, attractive and functional sites. They pay close attention to the backend infrastructure ensuring that it is scalable and optimally tuned.”

Collaborative Design System

The TEEG and Deepend Design teams collaborated to implement an overhauled design system focused on delivering premium experience online. Careful consideration was given to the language used for key call-to-action such as "Let’s Play" encouraging users to proceed with booking while maintaining the brand's tone of voice.

Streamlining design

The initial design system developed for the premium Kingpin brand was adapted across the suite of TEEG brands, including Timezone and Zone Bowling, providing substantial efficiencies across the roll-out of each instance.

Building a highly unique static site platform that simplifies content editing and publishing while maintaining speed and stability.

A unique Umbraco and Cloudflare based web platform

A unique Umbraco and Cloudflare based web platform

combining Umbraco and Cloudflare created a highly stable and lightning fast platform.

Creating a completely self-service solution

allowing a content editor to initiate the build and deployment of a new static site, from within the constructs of Umbraco, without involving further technical staff.

Smart automations reducing content creation and publishing time

Smart automations reducing content creation and publishing time

For example, whenever a library item is republished within the Umbraco framework, the static site builder automatically republishes every page that item was used on, generating the necessary static html. Further to this, we are using the image processor / image resize facility within Umbraco to scale our assets for use on responsive versions of the site.

Results

The TEEG static site solution is a truly innovative way of delivering a rich design experience whilst doing so in a lean manner. The static publishing of all the sites pages and content see’s them sitting in a cache layer, completely removing the need to communicate back and forth to a database via scripting, to dynamically publish content.

The static site ensures maximum availability and redundancy for the platform. The site is served from Cloudflare’s CDN network – ensuring high availability, even in times where the CMS infrastructure is impacted. The entire site is deployed to Blob storage, vastly simplifying the infrastructure required to host the site, hence the ongoing costs.

Result Listing

50%+ cost reduction in infrastructure load

Use of automation within Umbraco infrastructure has seen publishing resource reduced significantly.

30% cost reduction in ongoing development

Due to the common code base, module design and multi-tenant Umbraco instance used in building the new platform.

100% uptime

In the approx. 18 months since creating the site there hasn’t been any time when it was down for customers.
